Good Day NFT Campaign celebrates enforcement of “international age” system with exclusive NFT
28 June 2023
PUBLISH, in collaboration with TokenPost, is pleased to announce the issuance of a new NFT (non-fungible token) to mark the implementation of South Korea’s "Unified Age Act".
South Korea has historically recognized three age calculation methods: "Korean age", "calendar age", and "international age", each of which resulting in different ages. For example, someone born in September 1987 would be considered 37, 36, and 35 years old respectively, according to these three different methods.
The Korean age method, where everyone’s age increases by a year on New Year's Day, has uncertain origins but is known to be rooted in East Asian cultures. Despite this, South Korea remains the only country to have carried this tradition into the 21st century. Though not generally used for official matters, it is commonly used in everyday conversations and customs.
In the calendar age system, a person is considered to be of a certain age from the 1st of January of the year they are due to turn that age.
On the other hand, international age, which starts from zero at birth and adds one year with each birthday, has been the only legal standard for age in South Korea since the establishment of the Civil Act in 1958. Despite attempts to universally adopt this method in 1962, various methods have been used until this day.
Effective June 28th, however, the Korean age and calendar age methods will be dropped in favor of the international age method.
To mark the event, PUBLISH and TokenPost created the "Unified Age Act Commemorative NFT". The NFT will be distributed to all PUBLISH iD users free of charge from June 29.
